  14. A newsgroup for the World Wide Web project is really missing
  15. and positioning the newsgroup beside of comp.infosystems.gopher
  16. and comp.infosystems.wais is ideal.

  18. But I would prefer as a name for the new group:

  20. comp.infosystems.world-wide-web

  22. instead of

  24. comp.infosystems.www.

  26. WWW is much shorter and easier to write, but only insiders know what
  27. www is standing for. The name world-wide-web on the other side gives
  28. instantly an idea of the intentions of such a system. So for
  29. presentation and public relation purposes the term world-wide-web 
  30. is much better.

  32. Another problem is the pronounciation of www. Has anyone a suggestion?

  34. Finally I would like to suggest that we come to an agreement
  35. on how to name the World Wide Web project in speech and writing.
  36. In the past I have seen the following terms:

  38. World Wide Web, World-Wide-Web, WorldWideWeb, world-wide-web,
  39. www, WWW, W3, w3,
  40.  
  41. Compare this confusing collection of terms with the term "Gopher".
  42. "Gopher" is a single, easy pronouncable and associative term.

  44. And the terms for the different browsers and other software:

  46. www, WWW, viola, violaWWW, WWWViola, tkwww, TkWWW, tkWWW, midaswww,
  47. MidasWWW, Xmosaic, xmosaic, X Mosaic, WWWNextStep, WWWLibrary,
  48. HTMLGate, WWWLineMode, www_and_frame, print-www, WWWMailRobot ...
  49.  
  50. When I first come to info.cern.ch last year with just a vague idea
  51. of what World Wide Web could mean. I was very confused and it takes
  52. some time and experimentation until I know what I need to get started.
  53. The situation now is b even worse.
